Why We Don’t Mind Hearing the Same Song a Hundred Times (Sort Of)

An open letter to the playlist we both love... and secretly want to skip.

There’s something truly magical about hearing that song—the one your child’s been rehearsing to for weeks. You recognise it instantly. So do your neighbours. So does the dog.

Whether it’s blasting from the studio speakers or echoing from your living room during “just one more run-through,” routine music has a way of becoming the unofficial soundtrack to your entire month (or term... or year).

Do we ever get tired of it? Well… yes. And also no. It’s complicated.

Stage One: Ooh! This is catchy!

At first, the music feels exciting. Upbeat. Infectious. You catch yourself humming it in the car or tapping your foot while waiting in the school run queue. “This is a bop,” you think.

Dancers feel it too—music and movement click, and everything starts falling into place. Suddenly, that routine becomes the highlight of the week.

Stage Two: Wait… it’s stuck in my head.

It’s 9pm. You’re brushing your teeth. And there it is:
“5, 6, 7, 8...”
The chorus plays on loop in your brain, and there’s no off switch.

Dancers get it too. Even mid-maths lesson, you’ll see them subtly marking out the moves under the desk. It’s no longer just music—it’s choreography, emotion, and muscle memory all rolled into one.

Stage Three: Do NOT press play again. (Please.)

It’s been weeks. Possibly months. You’ve heard the routine song more than your own ringtone. And yet, here it comes again—because "I just need to practise that turn one more time."

This is the moment parents and dancers everywhere develop a love/hate relationship with routine music. You adore what it represents. But you could do with a short break... just a short one.

Stage Four: You Hear It Differently On Stage

Then something shifts. Show day arrives, and the music plays on a proper sound system. Lights, costumes, teamwork—it all comes together.

And suddenly, that song you’ve heard a hundred times? It’s glorious. Every beat connects to a moment your child worked for, practised through, and finally brought to life.

You may have rolled your eyes a week ago… but in that moment, you feel every single beat.

Stage Five: Sentimental Forever

Months later, you hear it again—maybe on a playlist, in a shop, or by accident on the radio. And it still makes you smile. Because it’s more than just a track—it’s the memory of hard work, friendship, rehearsals, nerves, and proud moments.

Dancers will always remember “their” song from each term. It stays with them, long after the steps have changed.

So No, We Don’t Really Mind.

Because that one song becomes the soundtrack to a season of growth. And yes, we might secretly wish for something new now and then—but we wouldn’t change it for the world.
